Supported Browsers

Michigan State University officially supports the latest version of browsers used by more than 1% of visitors to msu.edu or msutoday.msu.edu.

Perk of using Sitecore: As an enterprise CMS, any websites built using SitecoreAI will always be supported in the required browsers. 

Browser and Device Testing

  • Test the website on various platforms, browsers and devices.
  • Be sure to test both PC and Mac.
  • Test in all officially supported browsers.
  • View pages at all viewport sizes to confirm content displays as desired.
  • Consider the key audience and their device and browser preferences as a way of prioritizing testing. Use analytics to determine the devices, screen sizes and browsers most used.
  • Use an emulator browser extension or online testing service if the unit does not have access to multiple devices for testing.
  • Utilize accessibility testing tools, including Silktide, to ensure webpages meet accessibility standards. 

Code Validation

Check for HTML and CSS errors that break functionality and layout. 
Use free validation tools: 

  • W3C Markup Validation Service
  • CSS Validation Service 
  • For automated validation, consider Total Validator
Perk of using Sitecore: As an enterprise CMS, code is validated and tested as Sitecore components are developed. 

Conduct Regular Reviews

Make it a regular practice to audit the website for broken links, accessibility barriers and browser compatibility issues. Check for issues every time a page is added or deleted. Additionally, check for issues every three-to-four months, or more often if content is updated consistently.

Archiving Major Changes

If replacing an existing website or making major changes to a website, contact University Archives and Historical Collections to determine if the original website needs to be crawled for archival purposes in accordance with MSU's electronic records management practices.
