Website Project Process

Planning a Website Project

University Communications and Marketing has developed a framework for website projects that includes project stages and a comprehensive list of required and optional tasks. The tasks included in a project will depend on the size and complexity of a project and the needs of a unit.

Units may choose to do this work on their own; this is a more common approach for units with more resources or for smaller and less complex websites. Alternatively, the unit may opt to work with a preferred vendor partner. This is more common for units with fewer resources and for larger or strategic websites, particularly those that serve prospective students, current students and alumni audiences.

Building a Website

When it comes to building a website, units may choose to work on their own, using resources and training provided by University Communications and Marketing or with MSU’s preferred vendor, RDA. RDA is a Platinum Partner with Sitecore and has significant experience designing and building sites in Sitecore, including numerous MSU sites. RDA built the MSU component library and handles all development work required for a website project, such as when a new component is needed.

Fast Track

This approach is for small, simple websites that do not serve strategic audiences. University Communications and Marketing trains the unit staff. Units build the website entirely on their own.

Plans Only

RDA provides blueprints (e.g., wireframes and layouts). University Communications and Marketing trains unit staff. Units build the website using the provided blueprints.

Built Together

RDA provides blueprints. University Communications and Marketing trains unit staff. RDA and unit staff co-build the website, with the unit building some sections in order to reduce costs.

Built by RDA

RDA builds the website for the unit, including content migration. University Communications and Marketing trains unit staff. Unit manages the website content moving forward after launch.

Getting Started

To get access to Sitecore, complete the site inquiry form linked below. The program manager will contact the unit to explore the scope of the website and unit needs and will discuss the website creation process.

For units building a website on their own, a website request form must be submitted to provide additional details necessary to create the website container; training is provided and then users can begin work.

For projects involving our vendor partner, additional meetings may be scheduled to initiate project discovery, define the scope of work and kick off the project.

Site Inquiry

Start a website project by contacting our team. University Communications and Marketing will follow up with additional information following inquiry.
