The Sitecore production release Tuesday, Feb. 10, changed the page publishing process with the implementation of workflows. See the production release notes for more information.

Delete a Page

Deleting a page removes the page from the live website and removes all content from the system.

Prepare to Delete

Prior to deleting a page, content authors need to confirm that the page is not referenced by other items within the website. These references are done through content linking in the system.

In Content Editor:

  1. Select the page in the Content Tree.
  2. Click the Navigate tab in the navigation ribbon.
  3. Click Links in the Navigate tab to view a list of links to the page.
  4. If there are no items listed under “Items that refer to the selected item,” the page is not referenced in a separate page or component.
  5. If there are one or more items on the list, remove those references before proceeding.

Next, content authors must determine if the page is published:

  1. Put the full-page URL into a web browser.
    1. If it loads, the page is published.
    2. If the page does not display and “Page not found” appears, the page is not published.

Delete the Page

Delete an Unreferenced and Unpublished Standard Page

Note: These instructions apply to standard pages only. They do not apply to Story, Event Details, Person Details or Program Details pages. For these other pages, see “To Delete an Indexed Page,” below.

In Content Editor:

  1. Right-click the page in the Content Tree and select Delete.

Delete a Published Standard Page

Note: These instructions apply to standard pages only. They do not apply to Story, Event Details, Person Details or Program Details pages. For these other pages, see “To Delete an Indexed Page,” below.

Method 1: Unpublish and delete

In Content Editor:

  1. Select the page in the Content Tree, select the Publish tab on the Navigation Ribbon and click Change.
  2. Uncheck the Publishable checkbox and click OK to save.
  3. Click Save on the navigation ribbon to save all changes.
  4. Click the Edit button on the Home tab of the navigation ribbon.
  5. Click Submit to submit the change to the publishing workflow. This will ultimately update the status on the live site, removing the page from view.
  6. Enter a comment describing the update. Comments assist reviewers in understanding what changes were made to the page.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Switch to Page builder.

In Page Builder:

  1. Click the refresh icon above the canvas to load changes.
  2. Wait for the next publishing cycle to run, publishing the changes. Once complete, the page state in Page builder will change to Approved.
  3. Once the page state shows as Approved, delete the page by clicking the three-dot icon next to the page name in the Sitemap Content Tree and choosing Delete in the pop-up menu, then clicking the Delete button in the pop-up panel to confirm the order.

Method 2: Delete page and publish parent page

In Content Editor:

  1. Delete the page by right-clicking the page name in the Content Tree and choosing Delete in the pop-up menu or using the Delete button in the Home ribbon.
  2. Once the page is deleted, select the parent page of the deleted page.
  3. Click the Edit button on the Home tab of the navigation ribbon.
  4. Click Submit to submit the change to the publishing workflow. This will ultimately republish the parent page, removing the deleted page in the process.
  5. Enter a comment describing the update. Comments assist reviewers in understanding what changes were made to the page.
  6. Click OK.
Note: It is a best practice when deleting a page to add a redirect link. This helps visitors who bookmarked the link or accessed the page from a link on another website get to helpful digital destination.

Delete an Indexed Page

Note: These instructions apply to Story, Event Details, Person Details or Program Details pages only. For standard pages, see “To Delete an Unreferenced and Unpublished Standard Page” or “To Delete a Published Standard Page,” above.

Indexed pages are deleted using scripts. The script ensures that the page is also removed from index-based listing pages. The script will only work on “publishable” content.

In Content Editor:

  1. Select the page in the Content Tree, select the Publish tab on the Navigation Ribbon and click Change.
  2. Confirm the Publishable checkbox is checked and click OK to save.
  3. Click Save on the navigation ribbon to save all changes.
  4. Right click on the page name in the Content Tree.
  5. Click Scripts on the flyout menu.
  6. Click Delete Item From Site and Search.
  7. Click Save on the navigation ribbon.
