Events Taxonomy

An Events Listing Page can be configured to allow website visitors to filter Event Detail Pages using Event Types, Event Categories, Event Audiences, Offices and Centers, and Departments.

Event Types

Event Types describe the general style or format of an event. They should not be so specific that filtering an Event Listing Page to the type narrows the content down to just one event; types should be higher-level bucket labels. Event Type tag options will only appear in a website’s Event Type filter if they’ve been applied to a published event.

It is a best practice to limit the number of actively used Event Type tags on a website to 10. This ensures that the drop-down Event Type filters are usable on a mobile device.

University Communications and Marketing worked with communications professionals across campus to develop a global taxonomy framework offering many Event Type options. Expand the accordion tab below to view the suggested Event Types for units wishing to align with the university global taxonomy.

Suggested Event Type Unit Taxonomy

Units should choose up to 10 type tags for use:

  • Academic Calendar
  • Camp
  • Concert/Performance
  • Conference/Symposium
  • Exhibition
  • Film/Screening
  • Fitness/Recreational Sport
  • Game Watch/Tailgate
  • Lecture/Seminar
  • Meeting/Information Session
  • Program/Class
  • Recruitment
  • Service/Volunteerism
  • Social Event/Reception
  • Tour
  • Workshop

Note: The name field when creating a tag does not allow for special characters, such as the slash. You can use special characters in the tag value field that displays to website visitors. The examples above were designed as label values, not Content Tree item names.

If a unit has questions about recommended Event Types, please contact Katie Kelly to discuss.

Event Categories

Event Categories generally describe an event. Event Categories are a global taxonomy designed to enable a future campuswide events calendar.

It is a best practice to limit the number of actively used Event Category tags on a website to 10. This ensures that the drop-down Event Category filters are usable on a mobile device. Event Category tag options will only appear in a website’s Event Category filter if they’ve been applied to a published Event Details Page.

University Communications and Marketing worked with communications professionals across campus to develop the global taxonomy framework offering many options for Event Categories. Expand the accordion tab below to view the available options.

Other Ways to Tag: Backend Tags and Unit Tags

Backend Tags and Department (i.e., Unit) Tags are used to further tag and categorize events, news and people within a website. These tags are referenced by Sitecore Search when delivering search results within the page. In the future, website managers may be able to use these tags to control a prefiltered view of news, events or people on a page. University Communications and Marketing is documenting use case requests to see if this functionality is needed.

For example, within a college website:

  • An outreach program landing page might feature events tagged to that program, while the college events list would show all events within the college website.
  • An academic department landing page might feature news tagged to that department, while the college news page would show news from all departments within the college.

Units interested in using these additional tags to create prefiltered Events Listing Pages should contact University Communications and Marketing.

Request a New Department Tag

Most units associated with an MAU have been created in the system under the Departments field. A unit tag may be nested under another unit tag.

If a content author believes that a tag is missing and would like it added to the system, contact Katie Kelly to discuss the need. Katie will provide guidance on if the tag exists (and where) or if it can be added to the global taxonomy.
